Refining

Par Hawaii’s refinery has produced the necessary fuels to keep Hawaii on the move for more than 50 years. Through ongoing investment in new processing units, the refinery has continued to evolve to meet the state’s energy needs. The refinery is well positioned to become even more important to Hawaii’s future energy picture in the decades ahead.

Overview

Producing Fuels for our Islands

Par Hawaii’s team operates the sophisticated processing units on the 112-acre refinery in Campbell Industrial Park in Kapolei around the clock to produce a full spectrum of products — jet fuel, gasoline, diesel, ship fuel and fuel for Hawaii’s families and businesses. Samples of all finished products are subjected to rigorous quality control tests before being distributed to customers.

Taking on the Responsibility of Importing Crude Oil

Hawaii has no crude oil sources of its own and Par Hawaii takes on the responsibility of importing crude oil from other parts of the world to make the energy products Hawaii needs. Oil tankers deliver crude oil at Par Hawaii’s single point mooring, a floating terminal about 1.5 miles off of Barbers Point. Crude oil is transferred from the mooring to the refinery onshore through undersea pipelines.

Our Processing Units
The refinery’s crude distillation unit separates crude oil into different components that are used to make refined petroleum products. The vacuum distillation breaks these components down even further.
Ready for Renewables
The distillate hydrocracker converts these components into products such as jet fuel. The distillate hydrotreater, one of the refinery’s newest units, was a $27 million investment completed in 2018 to produce clean ultra-low sulfur diesel and enable the refinery to produce more jet fuel. Both the hydrocracker and hydrotreater may also be used to produce renewable energy, including sustainable aviation fuels, in the future.

Refinery Storage Capacity

Par Hawaii’s refinery has the capacity to store 5.2 million barrels of crude oil and refined products. There is additional storage at Par Hawaii’s Sand Island terminal and on the neighbor islands. A barrel is equivalent to 42 gallons.

Project Benefits

Celebrating 50 years of reliable energy for our community

For 50 years, Par Hawaii’s refinery has played an important role in Hawaii’s economy, and has provided energy products that has helped our islands to move forward.

Par Hawaii is celebrating an important milestone this year: the 50th anniversary of our refinery. On April 12, 1972, operators turned on the switches and the refinery began processing crude oil to provide a more secure, on-island supply of jet fuel and other refined petroleum products.

The refinery’s goal has always been to enhance energy security in our islands.

The refinery ushered in a new era of energy security for Hawaii. The refinery, constructed from the ground up on 112 acres on the Ewa Plains for $42 million, represented energy security for the islands, at a time when the state had experienced the volatility and instability of fuel rationing as a result of the Energy Crisis.

It took visionary leaders in business, significant risk and investment, and the support of elected government officials to turn take the refinery from blueprints to reality. Over the years, millions of dollars have been invested into the refinery to meet stringent, evolving environmental standards, and to optimize the refinery’s processing units to provide more value and increased efficiency in producing energy products Hawaii needs.

The refinery’s complexity is an intricate engineering marvel, operated by sophisticated professionals to meet the energy needs of the state. Employees work in teams 24/7, every day of the year, and are prepared to meet the energy needs of Hawaii in the decades ahead.
